2012 Summer Concert Series

Summer Concert Series
Wednesdays, July 11, 25 and August 1 and 8

The Friends of Long Hill Estate will once again host their 'Music at the Mansion' series in July and August at the Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown. All of the concerts will begin at 6:30 p.m. The grounds will be open for picnicking at 5:30 p.m. Parking will be at the Mansion, at the Wilbert Snow School, 299 Wadsworth Street, and at Mercy High School, 1740 Randolph Road. All concerts are free to the public.

Schedule of Bands:

July 11th - "The Bernadettes"
Making their first appearance at the Music of the Mansion series are The Bernadettes. Those who have seen The Bernadettes perform live in their latest incarnation might be surprised to know that the Bernadettes started out in the early 1990s as a traditional-style blues band. The band soon began experimenting with their own unique versions of R&B classics. This evolved further with the addition of classic Motown hits, contemporary funk, soul, and R&B flavored rock songs to their large and varied, dance-oriented song list. The resulting mix has become the staple of the band's offering to live audiences. They were voted the best rhythm and blues band in the New Haven Advocate "Sounds of New Haven" 1996 readers poll, and also chosen by that paper as New Haven's #1 bar band. Visit their website at, The Bernadettes for more information on their band.

July 18th -   Due to the severe thunderstorm watch issued for Middlesex County by the National Weather Service, this concert has been rescheduled to August 8th.

July 25th - "Eight to the Bar"
Back by popular demand, Eight to the Bar will perform on July 25th. They were voted ‘Best Band 2008’ by Connecticut Magazine and ‘Best Jazz Band’ in the 2008 Hartford Advocate Readers Poll. Drawing their musical influences from American roots music: swing, boogie woogie, rhythm & blues, soul, and Motown, Eight to the Bar is known for its outstanding its instrumentalists and sophisticated musical and vocal arrangements. Visit their website at, Eight to the Bar for more information on their band.

August 1st - "Michael Cleary Band"
Making their third appearance at the Mansion on August 1st is The Michael Cleary Band. The Michael Cleary Band is a Hartford institution. They are celebrating their 20th year of making original Groove/ Funk/Rock music with a twist and have been called Hartford's answer to the Allman Brothers. Their shows are filled with great songs, monstrous solos, epic jams, funky grooves and wacky humor. All in all, a diverse, joyous musical stew played and sung by talented musicians who love what they do. Visit their website at, Michael Cleary Band for more information on their band.

August 8th - "Highland Rovers Band"
Also making their first appearance at the Wadsworth Mansion will be the Highland Rovers Band on August 8th. The Highland Rovers Band fuses popular rock percussive rhythms, bagpipes, and vocal harmonies to create an intricate and fresh sound. HRB's multi-layered, upbeat, and danceable music showcases their universal, appeal to both mainstream modern rock lovers and culturally diverse audiences searching for a distinct Celtic flavor. Visit their website at, Highland Rovers Band for more information on their band.

The music series is co-sponsored by the Friends of Long Hill Estate and the Long Hill Estate Authority.

Wadsworth Mansion Featured Wedding - Kate & Greg

Congratulations to Kate and Greg who were married at the Mansion on April 21st.  Despite the beautiful weather, they opted to have their ceremony in the West Ballroom and then they were able to enjoy the outdoor patio for cocktails and dancing.  We loved getting to know Kate and Greg during the planning process.  The love they share for each other touched all of us at the Mansion.  Kate and Greg - we wish you many years of happiness together!

Join us for Daffodil Day - Sunday, April 22nd!

The Friends of Long Hill Estate and the Long Hill Estate Authority will host their annual Daffodil Day on Sunday, April 22, 2012, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Wadsworth Mansion at Long Hill Estate, 421 Wadsworth Street, Middletown.  This family event will be held rain or shine and there is no charge for admission.

A plethora of daffodils will still be in bloom to  greet visitors as they follow the entrance drive leading to the Beaux Art style mansion for this annual celebration of spring. Guests are encouraged to enjoy the meadows planted by volunteers over the last decade. Throughout the afternoon there will be numerous activities for visitors wishing to celebrate spring.

Ongoing throughout the afternoon, docents from the Friends of Long Hill Estate will lead guided tours of the Mansion providing a narrative that details the history of the Estate.  Furniture donated by the Wadsworth Family will be on display in the History Room.

Join Lucy Meigs of Everyone Outside between 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the pool to the east of the Mansion.  Come see all the amazing creatures (tadpoles, salamander & insect larvae) that live in a vernal pool in the spring (viewing scopes provided). Learn what letterboxing is all about (think scavenger hunt) and try your hand at finding some with beautifully hand carved stamps. Sponsored by Everyone Outside and the Rockfall Foundation.

Between 1:30 and 3:00, thanks to ArtFarm, guests will enjoy roving musician Michael Pestel who will be playing the flute, penny whistle, and bird whistles, dressed in medieval garb. He will be accompanied by talented juggler Xaq Zukas.
